Friday the 13th Hell - A Windows love story

I love Windows, I really do, but updating it can be a pain. Here's a story from a few years ago.

Friday the 13th. Attempted to update my laptop with the latest updates so that I could move to Windows 10. After waiting ages for Windows to download the updates, I make the mistake of trying to install Avast anti-virus *without* removing the expired Kaspersky installation. I know that was dumb, but it was the end of a long day. The PC crashes with a reboot and die cycle, so I'm forced to do a "refresh" which reverts me back to Windows 8. Gulp!

I try to apply the updates so that I can move back to Windows 8.1 but it downloads the things and doesn't actually apply them. I don't know how to apply them, because this is windows 8 and there's obviously no sodding "Apply updates" button, because that would be too friendly. I stupidly try to use the built in Asus "Software updater" but it hangs on me. My WIFI dies because of bandwidth congestion and I have to log onto another PC and change the channel. I have, of course, forgotten my router password, so I check my files and find a couple of possibilities before finally connecting to advanced mode and getting it working. After four hours of upgrade hell, I give up for the night, secure in the knowledge that I'll have a fight on my hands to get my laptop back to the state it was in before I'd actually started tinkering with it.

This is why I do as much as possible using tablets. They may die after an upgrade, but at least they'll reset you back to the previous version of the operating system. When Windows goes bad on you, it's positively hellish.
